What it is: Glassdoor is a top job and recruiting site. It maintains a large database of company reviews submitted by job applicants and current and former employees. The company reviews link to Glassdoor’s searchable job listings to make it easy for a job seeker to do their company research.
Why it Matters to You: Glassdoor is admittedly a review system, not a ranking. Site’s users rank biotech & pharmaceutical companies on a scale of 5. The user input is compiled by Glassdoor, yielding a score and is very handy for specific company research as well as comparison with pharmacy peers. Glassdoor’s reviews include management approval, salary and benefits reports, and company culture.
Considerations: While it can provide very insightful information, Glassdoor is not a scientific survey and should be viewed as more a “word on the street” reference. That said, Glassdoor is the clear leader in user-submitted rankings. It often synthesizes dozens or even hundreds of reviews, thus mitigating sampling size bias, e.g., where one or two disgruntled employees can through off an entire ranking system

What it is: Pharm Exec publishes an annual list of the world’s top 50 companies. The website is partner to the print magazine Pharmceutical Executive. Together the publications produce analysis of business, strategy and government regulations geared toward industry professionals.
Why it Matters to You: Pharm Exec’s list is based on total annual sales volume, an analytic that captures size more than performance. Beside the annual sales number, Pharm Exec places the annual R&D (Research & Development) amount which indicates the resources that the company is putting into product improvement and new products.
Considerations: Pharm Exec’s ranking is a direct data pull from EvaluatePharms (www.evaluate.com), although it presents the information in a more accessible manner.

What it is: Contractpharma is a weekly online publication for industry professionals and contains information including market trends and regulatory compliance. The website is produced by Rodman Media Corp which has published a large portfolio of magazines on various genres since 1964.
Why it Matters to You: Contactpharma’s lists the top 25 pharm and biopharma companies in order of annual sales volume. The list identifies the sales of each entry so it is easy to compare the performance among the top companies. Each entry links to a detailed company profile that includes a list of the company’s top selling products, sales trends, and revenue forecast.
Considerations: Contractpharma’s ranking is admittedly based solely on reported sales volume for the preceding year. This is a static datapoint that essentially a proxy for market share. It does not speak to company profitability nor does it capture volume trends, so reading the company profile linked to each listing is really necessary to begin drawing conclusions from the ranking.

What it is: An annual ranking of the best workplaces in health care and biopharma. Great Place to Work’s data is the underpinning of Fortune’s ranking, so the two are very similar.
Why it Matters to You: Great Place to Work is a global people analytics and consulting firm that helps companies of all sizes produce better business results by focusing on the work experience for every employee.
Considerations: More than 95,000 US employees provided input to this year’s Best Workplaces in Health Care and Biopharma list. Great Place to Work analyzed each company’s performance on over 50 survey questions anonymously rated by their staff. All employees were invited to participate in the survey, which is designed to reveal whether the organization is consistently a great place to work for all its people.
What it is: The web-based employment recruitment service, Indeed, produces an annual list of top hospitals to work for.
Why it Matters to You: Employee reviews are a valuable tool to get insight on a workplace. While not a true statistical sampling, heavily trafficked forums such as Indeed can often generate a sufficient number of reviews so as to overcome the “sour grapes” reviews that can allow a handful of disgruntled users to distort smaller forums.
Considerations: While Indeed states that its ranking is based on its “analytics team” analyzing data from ratings and review on Indeed’s website, it is not at all clear how that analytics team evaluates the data or if includes any metric other than an accounting of user reviews.
