Comagine Health
/What it is: Comagine Health, formerly Qualis Health and HealthInsight, is a national, nonprofit, health care consulting firm whose mission is to work collaboratively with industry stakeholders to improve the health care system. Comagine’s on-line ranking is regularly updated and contains information for over 4,500 hospitals nationwide.
Why it Matters to You: Comagine offers a searchable hospital ranking database that allows the user to search by name and state. The database also allows for filtering for categories such as overall ranking; patient experience; healthcare-associated infections; and readmissions.
Considerations: The national rankings for hospitals are calculated using publicly reported data downloaded from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. The Hospital Compare data set contains hospital-specific performance data on more than 100 measures to analyze hospital performance. These quality measures include clinical process of care, patient outcomes and patient experience of care measures. The national rankings are based on hospitals' performance in four areas:
Patient experience of care
Health care associated infections
Mortality
Hospital readmissions
Hospitals are ranked based on their performance in each of these areas and the individual ranks are combined into an overall composite performance ranking, with the patient experience of care measures contributing 35 percent, the healthcare-associated infections 45 percent and mortality and readmissions 10 percent each to the composite rank.
Because of differences in hospital size, the types of patients they care for, and sampling strategies, the numbers of patients used to compute reported performance rates from the Quality Measures varies by hospital, clinical topic, and measure. This impacts the precision with which performance can be ranked.

Key Sample Findings
Many hospitals at the very top of other rankings - Mayo Clinic(85%), Johns Hopkins (62%), Cleveland Clinic (40%) - rate far less impressively in Comagine’s ranking. While Comagine does not provide any insight on this, one can speculate that these typically outstanding hospitals see more difficult patient cases, thus have lower patient outcome performance.
