SR Education Group (Graduateprograms.com)

What it is:  SR Education Group created graduateprograms.com to help students choose the best school for their career aspirations and budget. The website ranks the top 25 pharmacy schools in the country.

Why it Matters to You: This list ranks the top 25 pharmacy schools based on “student score” of up to 100. The score represents an average rating across a variety of facets including quality of instruction, satisfaction with degree, and networking opportunities. Each entry contains a link to a school profile that provides basic information such as student-to-faculty ratio and annual tuition. Most importantly, the user can view each student review - the student’s individual score plus an excerpt from their written assessment - that is compiled to form the overall score that causes the ranking.

Considerations: It is important to keep in mind that graduateprograms.com is a “peer review” ranking. In order for a school to be eligible to be featured on a Top Programs List, at least five students from that particular degree program must have submitted feedback on their institution. Graduate Programs only considers regionally or nationally accredited, non-profit institutions for our rankings. Aggregated student rating values were multiplied by 20 to create a Student Score out of 100; in the event of a tie, schools were awarded the same rank value.

TheBestSchools.org

TheBestSchools.org

What it is:  TheBestSchools.org is an academic and career guidance website that is published by college and secondary school educators. It is a member of both the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and the American Council of Education (ACE). The website offers users information on degrees, financial aid, careers as well as a “Student Health” section offering content including healthy habits and stress reduction.

Why it Matters to You: The Best Schools is a world ranking, so includes international programs. The website lists its 50 top schools in order, providing a profile of faculty, graduates and current students. The website also provides an overview of the school’s programs and degrees.

Considerations: The Best Schools relies heavily on data from the Center for World-Class Universities (known colloqually as “the Shanghai Rankings”). From there, The Best Schools researched the “most important characteristics” of each of the top 50 medical and pharmacy programs on the list in order to reveal why each university medicine and pharmacy program appears where it does. As such, the ranking is essentially a regurgitation of the Shanghai Rankings accompanied with the Best School’s interpretation.

U.S. News & World Report

U.S. News & World Report

What it is:  U.S. News & World Report annually publishes a well-recognized ranking of top schools. It is among the most cited rankings.

Why it Matters to You: Each fully accredited pharmacy program receives a “Peer Assessment Score.” The database can be searched based on score or alphabetically. Each of the entries links to further information about the school, including its ranking in other academic disciplines, e.g., health care management or occupational therapy.

Considerations:  All rankings are based solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline. Respondents rated the academic quality of programs on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding). They were instructed to select "don't know" if they did not have enough knowledge to rate a program. Only fully accredited programs in good standing during the survey period are ranked.

Student Doctor Network (SDN)

Student Doctor Network (SDN)

What it is: Student Doctor Network (SDN) is a non-profit created to help build a diverse doctor workforce by providing free advising resources and peer-support to “those who would otherwise not have access to such services.” SDN brings together thousands of current and future healthcare students and professionals into one community where they can share information, offer guidance, and provide encouragement to their peers and those coming up behind them. Its nearly 700,000 members spans from high school students to attending physicians.

Why it Matter to You: SDN ranks medical schools on a scale of 5 stars, with 5 stars being the best. It is not very clear how the ranking is determined, although it appears to be based on surveys submitted by website users. The ranking is searchable by SDN score; location; accepted MCAT (or PCAT for pharmacy applicants); accepted GPA

Considerations: SDN is a great resource to get “street level” intelligence on medical school admissions and student life. By reviewing a specific school profile, the user will be able to get detail on the school application process and interview, including specific questions that were asked during the interview and interview stress level.
